Made by Hand
Women from Cwm were taken on a journey that started with some informal textile workshops and ended up with them taking part in an unusual multi-media performance installation in the fuselage of a plane!
Textile artist Miranda Thomson worked with the group to create a beautiful wall hanging based on a tree of life. The project’s artistic director, Joanna Young, then used their hand movements and stories as the inspiration for a dance piece and film, working with film maker Simon Clode and composer James Williams.
In early July a dance was performed by Belinda Neave and Joanna Young with the film and music featuring the group’s voices and stories as part of the performance installation. This all took place inside a DC-9 aeroplane fuselage for the Adain Avion Cultural Olympiad event at The Works site in Ebbw Vale, with the wall hanging displayed in the General Offices.
This project was supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation as part of the ArtWorks programme exploring quality in participatory arts practice (find out more about this by going to the ArtWorks page on this website).
